If you’re an Instagram user and checked the app on 28th March, your feed was probably full of posts asking you to turn on notifications for the accounts you follow. This was due to a huge update that is coming to Instagram.

The update focuses on improving the user’s feed, showing photos and videos that you’ll likely be interested in.

To improve your experience, your feed will soon be ordered to show the moments we believe you will care about the most.

This change could potentially put small businesses at risk because their followers may not see the latest posts.

Although Instagram has not yet announced an official date for the algorithm update to take place, they did mention in their blog post it will be in the coming months.

We’re going to take time to get this right and listen to your feedback along the way. You’ll see this new experience in the coming months.

Whilst you could join the bandwagon and ask your followers to turn on notifications for business accounts, this may annoy your followers and could potentially receive backlash.

Due to this, it’s vital that you follow the below tips to survive Instagram’s algorithm update without annoying your followers.

Increasing Engagement

With the new update taking place, you need to do as much as you can to get that extra bit of engagement. The more people seeing your content the more engagement you are likely to get.

But how do you get more people to see your content? Well, you need to post at the right time. Tools such as Iconosquare allow you to identify the best time to post your content – one of the ways to increase exposure.

Another way to boost your engagement is by following these top tips.

It’s also recommended to ask questions or request followers to perform an action for example asking them to comment, like and tag friends on the post.

Use Hashtags

Hashtags are most likely always going to stay on Instagram, so why not take advantage of them? They’re free to use as well…

They are a great way for brands to get noticed, and by using them you are more likely to increase your engagement as others users will also see your content – providing you are using them effectively.

As mentioned in this post, when using hashtags make sure you pick relevant ones that are popular, get engagement and are suitable to the content you are posting.

Posting Quality Content

You may already be posting quality content, but if you think you could post better content then you’ve already answered your question. Maybe it’s time to improve the content and make it more engaging.

Content that interests your followers is more likely to improve engagement and also potentially pick up more followers, so make sure it’s eye-catching, interesting and engaging.

By following those tips, you are likely to stand a better chance in surviving the Instagram algorithm update. If you’ve got any other tips, why not share them below?
